History
Hawthorne was born Roisin O'Faolan in May of
1987 to Siobhan and Matthew O'Faolan -- his mother was a first
gen Irish immigrant and his father the youngest in a long line of
Irish Americans living in Chicago. He had a few scattered
interactions with the Supernatural as a child -- encounters with
ghosts, changelings and other Supernatural beings that were part
of his dad's extended family...
As a teenager, Roisin got involved in the punk scene in Chicago
and became involved in the local queer scene after coming out as
gay (but not trans) to supportive parents when she was sixteen
years old. Since she was a little bit more aggressive and violent
than other girls, Roisin looked for ways to channel that anger
and aggression into something positive -- which lead to her
taking up several self-defense classes. Mostly, she focused on
learning to leverage the fact that she was smaller than her
opponents to her advantage -- focusing on speed and accuracy of
blows more than power.
She had a lot of girlfriends as a teenager and continued to have
difficulty committing to a relationship into her college years --
though she usually tried to remain friends with her exes. Despite
a valiant effort, Roisin ended up failing college and started
working as a bouncer at a local lesbian club -- which she
excelled at, even if it started getting her dragged into more of
the Supernatural than she would've liked.
From the age of twenty, Roisin had been questioning her gender
identity (and to a lesser extent, her sexual identity). She'd
never felt "connected" to being a girl/woman and
despite coming to the understanding that being a "woman"
didn't mean she had to embrace "femininity" or the
expected feminine roles and had absolutely embraced being
masculine woman and a butch lesbian, she didn't feel quite right.
In 2011, Roisin was pretty sure she had her life together and was
going in the direction she wanted: she'd been together with the
same girl for the last 9 months, they'd moved in together and she
had just started to get a name for herself in the local MMA/UFC
circles...
On top of that, Roisin had been discussing her identity issues
with her girlfriend -- the fact that it wasn't femininity that
was the issue but rather, the idea of being a woman at all .. And
found that her girlfriend was incredibly supportive. As such,
Roisin had started to experiment with using the name Hawthorne
and was looking into the process of medical transition after
spending the last four years struggling so much.
Unfortunately, Hawthorne would find his life plans being
disrupted and be dragged into the world of the supernatural in an
irreversible way when he was embraced by a member of the Sabbat
on his way home from a Halloween party with his girlfriend.
To this day, Hawthorne has no idea what happened or how they were
ambushed -- all he can remember is something hitting him from
behind, taking him surprise and knocking him out. The next thing
he knew, everything was dark and it felt like the weight of the
earth itself was pushing down on top of him. Every attempt to
pull in breath felt unnatural but more than that -- every attempt
only got him a mouthful of dirt. In a blind panic, he managed to
claw his way out of the shallow grave only to be scooped up and
thrown into a battle he had no idea existed before that night.
The next few nights in Hawthorne's memory are a blur of blood,
pain, fear and rage.
Hawthorne was "lucky" enough to be the only Sabbat
survivors from the attack and was taken in his Sire's pack... The
trauma of his Embrace, the loss of his girlfriend and the shock
of what he was forced into immediately after sort of shattered
Hawthorne -- and being forced into Creation Rites only made that
worse. Desperate for approval and desperate to get away from
remembering his hopes and plans for mortal life, Hawthorne dove
into being Sabbat with the same passion he'd tackled everything
else in his life. And at least the Sabbat didn't seem to give a
fuck about being gay, straight or trans -- that was human
bullshit. He was even able to get a few favors from a local
Tzimisce to help him get a body that suited him a little bit
better (something he does not like to remember even remotely.)
And so, for six years, Hawthorne was a devoted member of the
Sabbat, letting his humanity and connection to it degrade...
Despite the fact that something kept nagging at him -- something
itched in the back of his mind that he didn't like this. He didn't
like who he had become, he didn't like what he was doing. Some
part of him felt sick at it and try as he might, he couldn't
quite excise that part of himself. Eventually, those feelings
came to a head and Hawthorne made his break for it -- following a
particularly disastrous frenzy that occured because he found out
that several members of his pack had a taste for innocence -- and
the younger, the better... This all culminated in diablerizing
his Sire and making a run for it. He ran for the outskirts of
Chicago and got involved with a group of Anarchs operating in the
Suburbs.
Unfortunately, that didn't last for too long and about a week
before the start of the story, Hawthorne's little gang of former-Sabbat
anarchs got wiped out by the Sabbat, once again leaving Hawthorne
the only survivor.
(i'll vaguely buffy-fy this later)
